Recommendations for laying of Large format manufactured Stone & concrete Pavers.

  • Clean the Paver with a sponge and water to remove dirt residue and dust. This helps with the bonding of the product.

  • The installation of bedding is one of the most important parts of the paving process. Ensure the bedding material is compacted, the better the ability to handle loads.

  •  All external paving should be executed on a concrete substrate. Concrete substrate should be a minimum bed thickness of 20mm with no voids and evenly spread. It is vital the surface is clean and dust free to enable a good bond. Screed Bed Ratio: 3-4 parts Sand, 1 part cement, 1 part water.

A Maximum thickness of 60mm is required before metal re-inforcement is necessary.Drainage is also a worthy consideration in preparation for paving.

Some base structures can be waterproofed to not only repel water but reduce effloresence. A gradient fall in the subsurface will assist with drainage and prevent water pooling. The fall should be a minimum of 1%.

The supporting base structure must be left to cure prior to laying paving.

  •  Apply Bonding slurry to the back of the product in an even coat 1-2mm thick. place product into position gently tap down with a rubber mallet. Work in small areas as it may begin to dry before you have laid the product. Tap to desired level. Trowel fill any voids around and the product removing any excess.

Remove any excess material from the surface using a clean sponge and water.

Movement joints should be approximately 6-10mm in width and should be in consistent alignment through all properties of the pavement. Expansion joints are required it is up to the contractor to decide where they go, site specific structural engineering advice should be considered.

  • In preparing the joint ensure it is free of debris. All paving must be checked for ‘drummy pavers’ or de-bonding, before continuing and rectified if need be. Joint width, the minimum recommendation is 3mm and the maximum subject to the desired look. Mix grout to manufacturers’ instructions. Ensure it is not too wet, as this can reduce strength and result in cracking. If grout is not worked into the full depth of the joint there will be resulting grout failure.

  • Sealing is necessary for the prevention of staining, always ensure that the pavers are clean and fully dry prior to sealing. Hewnstone paving leaves the manufacturer unsealed. ( A Honed surface has 1 coat of sealer applied.) Swimming Pool Coping also has one coat of sealer.

It is therefore recommended to apply sealer to the paving area once installed.

We recommend using Protecta seal Natural Solvent sealer. 5L = 45m2

  • All paving should be left clean from dirt dust mould and efflorescence. These are usually controlled using just water. However if left to grow and stain can potentially cause permanent damage.

  •  Efflorescence or white salts can appear over time on the surface of the product. The effective removal of this salt is done using Crommelin a fast acting and ready to use product. This is readily available at hardware stores.
